Homebrew DVD Player software released for Wii - Wii Media Player DVD MFE
Team Symbiote have released a DVD Player for the Wii, now all those Wii modders can jump for joy. It seems as if a lot of hackers were at work on the project and it is a total software solution to get DVDs playing on the Wii. In order to get it working, you have to...

This was made back before the twilight hack existed, when the only homebrew in existence on the Wii was Gamecube homebrew. This application ran in Gamecube mode, not Wii mode, and unlike Wiimedia, it required the use of a modchip.

I could be wrong but I believe the GC and Wii lasers are not constantly reading the disc. I believe it loads info into ram plays from there and only access the disc when it needs more info. DVD movies are constantly being accessed by the dvd laser.
