Also, will you be including an auto-update feature for WiiMiidia, like the ones found in the Homebrew Browser? That would be sweet!

DVD Support will be in the 1st Release and yes I have already added network update for Wii Miidia.

That is great news! Does that mean that Wii's without modchips will be able to read DVD's using WiiMiidia?

The reason I'm concerned is this: This isn't the first time a DVD player has been made for the Wii...

Homebrew DVD Player software released for Wii - Wii Media Player DVD MFE - MaxConsole Forums

Homebrew DVD Player software released for Wii - Wii Media Player DVD MFE
Team Symbiote have released a DVD Player for the Wii, now all those Wii modders can jump for joy. It seems as if a lot of hackers were at work on the project and it is a total software solution to get DVDs playing on the Wii. In order to get it working, you have to...
This was made back before the twilight hack existed, when the only homebrew in existence on the Wii was Gamecube homebrew. This application ran in Gamecube mode, not Wii mode, and unlike Wiimedia, it required the use of a modchip.

That's not the point though. The point is this: while the program did successfully play DVD's...

Wiinja Drivechip Forum :: View topic - DO NOT USE DVD PLAYER SOFTWARE!!

Quote:
The use of DVD PLAYER Software for GC MODE can cause harm to your laser in the long run. Apparently the wii lens isn't made for continuous loading, and using that app (on DVD5 or DVD9) will; cause the lens to deteriorate quickly over time.

But that was a while ago. Before the Twilight hack, before team twiizers...

...so much has changed for Wii homebrew.

And yet I am still concerned- Even with the advancements we've made in homebrew, could the Wii's laser still be damaged?

P.S. I apologize for not sighting the source of my concerns in my previous post. Such is what I should have done.

Edit: sdbinwiiexe, in your post, you said that since reading normal wii games doesn't damage the Wii's laser, neither should reading DVD's. Well, that made me curious, and a search on Google uncovered a piece of writing which clerified the situation perfectly for me. Hopefully the tidbit will benefit you well.

Wii Hack for DVD playback

Quote:
I could be wrong but I believe the GC and Wii lasers are not constantly reading the disc. I believe it loads info into ram plays from there and only access the disc when it needs more info. DVD movies are constantly being accessed by the dvd laser.
I hope that helps.

If it is a copy of a DVD Movie or if it is DVD wil XVIDs on it Yes Wii Miidia will be able to play it. If it is a Game ISO then NO this is not any type of iso loader or anything like that and will only read media in the way it was designed to function.

Everything sounds like it's all falling into place! Maybe it's time to update the roadmap and list out which video formats are ready and which ones still need coding? Oh and adding DVD Video to the "completed" list, that'll look slick

I'd be happy if I can replace my xbox 360 with the wii as a media center. All I need is support for WMV and for the wii to be able to connect to my server via the built in wireless connection. Not having everything recoded to flash would be great. I understand that's what Miidia will provide, is that correct?

Yeah I kind of got side tracked from the roadmap just by posting in threads. Here is a more updated list.

Wii Miidia Status:

======================
COMPLETED
======================
  • MP3/WAV/AAC Coding
  • Shoucast Streaming Support
  • Image Viewer (JPG/PNG/BMP/GIF)
  • Basic GUI Package
  • USB Mass Storage Support
  • Skin Sample
======================
MOSTLY COMPLETED*
======================
  • Main Video Code (Supports MPEG/MPEG2 currently)
  • Wiimote Controlls
  • Keyboard Input Controlls
  • Network Update Functions
  • Subtitles
======================
CURRENTLY WORKING ON
======================
  • Codec Incorperation (This is more like the video code handling the CODECs then the CODECs themselves)
  • DVD Support
  • SMB and SMB2 Support
======================
NEEDS WORKING ON
======================
  • Initial Skin(s) for Wii Miidia
======================
MAY WORK ON
======================
  • Launching a Wii Miidia website to show progress as well as host downloads of the application as well as skins and tools. (THIS IS NOT VERY HIGH UP ON MY LIST)
