Remember on the original ps1 the first few models you could boot a cdr with a simple little trick. Make something to hold the button down that told the system the lid was closed then after the bios loaded but before playstation logo appeared you could rip out the spinning disc and swap in a cdr.
Well I had a few friends ruin lasers this way. There was a better way of doing it.
1) Let the system think the lid is open at start up
2) Insert a real ps1 disc and go to the cd player
3) STOP THE DISC
4) Make your swap and exit
Just a small nugget of knowledge I thought everyone should know. Oh those were the days. Simplicity.

There were also more complex ways to do swap tricks with the revisions that fixed the one you mentioned, I remember Gamesmaster magazine had a book with step by step ways to boot "import" games for each change Sony made. I still have it somewhere when I next go visit my mum I will grab it out of the attic.
oh yeah, i remember doing that... ...last week (i could never be bothered modding my ps1, even though I'm completely capable of it) the way i did it with my PSone is real, fake, real, fake, boot and with my PSX i just did the CD player trick that you mentioned.
