I dont't think Mplayer-wii supports 720 mkv files but the streaming support is that great so could of been another problem.Btw have you ever tried streaming normal avis and get them to play properly just wandering if its just me that has a incredible streaming problem in mplayer-wii?

you will definately NOT be able to play 720p files, the wii is just to weak for such resolutions!

There's no reason why they couldn't be played (eventually) - the output resolution will be downscaled but they should still be viewable. I have an old PC hooked up to an SDTV with S-Video, and I play HD files all the time. The video card outputs to the TV and I watch them in SD.

The files themselves aren't "p (progressive scan)" BTW - the display does that.

This is actually a good question - does/will WiiMiidia support progressive scan? Or does setting it in the Wii settings handle it for all apps? Does/Will it downscale HD files?

Also glad to hear you got your infectus. Let this be a lesson to everyone - get an infectus BEFORE you start experimenting with system menu stuff

well but I guess the hardware is too weak to even DECODE the 720p and then DOWNSCALE it oO

I was thinking o it just being downscaled. I guess I'll just Connect my PC to my TV with a DVI-HDMI cable.

What exactly are you basing that off of, besides the fact that it's not as powerful as a 360 or PS3? Have you tried it with another homebrew media player?

What i'm basing off, that i think the wii is not that powerful as a PS3 or Xbox360, well, the technical details?

1x700 Mhz VS Cell Processor VS 3x3.5 GHz?

even the old xbox didn't do HD, and it doesn't do HD. that should be enough!

Well, there you go, you had no idea, did no tests, and stated your guess as fact. I just played a couple 720 HD avi files on MPlayerWii (r0n's version) and they played just fine, and I'm grabbing some mkv stuff to test tomorrow (not much out there that fits on a 2GB SD card :P )

Obviously on the Wii and my SDTV they don't play in HD, but there were no blocks, artifacts or skips. I'm quite confident that HD files can be handled in software to play smoothly on Wii - but don't take my word for it.

dCiSo? You wanna chime in on this?

I have been working on the mkv support for some time. I finally have my Wii back to full working order. I do believe it has enough power behind it to handle the task, however it is not one of my biggest concerns on the intial release. My goal right now is to clean up the code I have here and get a few more hickups worked out. Off subject a bit though for people who think the Wii has really weak hardware I advise you to check out the engine and screenshots for the game called "The Conduit" you will be a bit suprised on how much of a punch the Wii really packs.

I will also be doing alot of travel the next 3 weeks or so, so I may not me around much in this time frame. Real life work calls and I have bills to pay.

Conduit looks freaking awesome.

On the MKV thing - that's cool, I think most of us just want to see the initial release happen and get a nicer, more stable media player on our wiis as soon as possible. Once the baseline code is there and working smoothly add-ons like 1080 support and more containers/formats can come in subsequent updates.

Oh yeah - MPlayerWii crashes on mkvs and wmv despite them being claimed as supported, so no tests on those :P
