I am still upset that it caused such a delay but again thats what I get for trying to cut corners when I should have done everything from the ground up to start.

The GUI is going to be a little different and any suggestions or feedback to how you guys may prefer it would be great. As always I am open to any and all ideas and suggestions.
I've got an idea... How about if the GUI is build in flash. Then anyone who wants can rearrange the gui to their desire.
I own a Cowon D2 (tiny media player) wich alows the user to create their own GUI. There's some realy neat GUIs that users been building. Figured since the D2 can handle a flash-lite GUI the wii shouldn't have any problems running that in the background eighter.

Cheers!

I hate to squash the idea, but that would mean writing a SWF rendering engine into it, which is no simple task I'd imagine. You can design a skin easily enough with XML and PNG files, and is more accessible than Flash to most people.

Ideas are ment to be broken until you find the unbreakeble idea.
I'm no coder, so I have no clue what amount of work effort would have to go into implementing flash skins, so if you say it's a less good idea I believe you. I just liked the way it was implemented into the firmware of the Cowon D2 as an option to run a flash file as a GUI.

Is there any graphics apps that can be used to build a GUI for XML and PNG files and simply link functions into button areas or how is this done? (We could setup a seperate thread for this conversation, as it's neat and tidy in this thread).

I think a text editor should suffice for the XML part. Personally, I'd love it if a sample skin could be released should it be done before the app itself, so people could learn how to skin for WiiMiidia and get cracking on some skins. I know I'd like to

I'd imagine running a Flash based menu system would be adding a fair chunk of pointless resource use on a console that's not exactly running with an excess of powerful hardware as it is.

I'd be perfectly happy with a nice simple menu system if it meant better performance.

Skinning is not a high priority for me. As long as it plays media files well, I am happy.

The preview screenshot looks good. Keep it simple and white, just like the Wii.

Downloading cover art from the internet automatically would be a better idea.

Use the accelerometers in the Wiimote to make a Minority-Report-style interface. Where you can push and shove stuff around to find the file you want.

I honestley must say that the idea for the flash is reaaly good, however I do have to agree that it would be alot more work than the xml method I am using now. As for the idea of downloading cover art that is something that is not really that hard to add and I may put that in here as well.

dciso, here just to once again say thanks for the effort and to confirm if you are going to continue despite the port of geeXboX. I guess everybody thinks you should.

Yes I am going to continue with WiiMiidea. I support the guys on their efforts with GeeXbox 100% however they are going down the same road I did. They based it off the wiilinux and mplayer code. I have offered to give them all the code I worked on up to the point where I decided to just rewrite instead of trying to fix all the bugs.

It is a great release and it is at where WiiMiidia was at when I ran into the problems maybe a little behind without wiimote support, but like I said that will just be a matter of time as I plan on sharing what I had if they want it.

So by rewriting everything from scratch you're WiiMiidia is not based on gc-linux and thus not dependent on its progress? That would be fantastic news.
